New map – Rough Creek Watershed Trail System

We recently published a FREE map of the Rough Creek Watershed Trail System in Haywood County.  A short 30 minute drive from Asheville, the area was listed  as an outstanding ecological site by the Society of American Forestry in 1979.  It was also certified as a North Carolina Registered Natural Heritage Area (NCRNHA), because of its unique Swamp Forest-Bog complex (Glades section) that contained many rare & endangered plants.   In 2002, with the help of the Southern Appalachians Highlands Conservancy, a conservation easement was established throughout the watershed property.  This was made possible through a partnership between the Town of Canton & the North Carolina Clean Water Management Trust Fund.  The watershed and trail system is open to the public year-round during daylight hours.

As part of our work with the Town of Canton, a map was published to the Avenza PDF-Maps App and store. In the near future, we’ll be adding a PDF of this map to the Town of Canton website (“Rough Creek Watershed” Trail System | canton) as well as an interactive web map. We also plan on providing GPX files of the trails and roads.  The Rough Creek Watershed Trail System is in Haywood County

The Town of Canton is working to promote the Rough Creek Watershed Trail System as a place people can get out to enjoy the outdoors while visiting the town. The watershed consists of 870 acres of land with 3 trails totaling over 10 miles.  A great asset of the Town of Canton and the local community. The trails and roads can get overgrown during the summer so this is a good time of year to go for a hike or ride. Currently, the trails must be accessed from the trailhead at the southern entrance.   A hidden gem in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina.  Mountain bikers and hikers alike will find area unique a worth a trip to get out and explore!

Download the PDF-Maps app here – Avenza PDF Maps | Get the app. Get the map.® and then do a quick search for Rough Creek Watershed. The map is free and will download to your phone so it works with the phone GPS and no cell phone reception. Available for iOS and Android.

We hope you enjoy it!

DuPont Map Updates

It’s been an exciting month at DuPont State Recreational Forest.  On July 1st, the new foot bridge at the Hooker Falls parking area officially opened.  This bridge crosses Little River and gives visitors a safe way to access the Triple Falls trail from the Hooker Falls parking area.  Before the bridge was constructed, you had to cross over the busy Staton Road to access the Triple Falls trail.  Using the new bridge gives visitors access to the Triple Falls trail by traveling under the bridge on Staton Road therefore avoiding all vehicular traffic.

The ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Aleen Steinberg Visitor Center (ASC) was also held on July 1st.  In addition to the Visitor Center opening, a new wheelchair accessible trail was opened accessing High Falls from the parking area.  This new trail is hard-packed, fine gravel meandering through beautiful forest before it connects with the existing High Falls and Triple Falls trails.  If you have our current DuPont State Recreational Forest Trail Guide, you can draw in the new trail using the image below.

We also got a chance to ride the newest trail in the forest.  The new Turkey Knob trail connects the Turkey Knob Road to the Briery Fork Trail.  This new trail is a lot of fun and provides much needed connectivity in the Southeast portion of the forest. The image below shows the location of the new trail.  We’ve updated our map and will be printing the second version in the upcoming months.  Keep an eye out for the DuPont State Recreational Forest Trail Guide at a local retailer near you.Turkey Knob Trail

DuPont State Recreational Forest map review

WNCOutdoors.info recently completed an online review of our DuPont State Recreational Forest map and had this to say: “this is another fantastic publication made by locals who are not only trail experts, but whose award-winning company is leading the entire industry in the outdoor recreation map space.”

DuPont is the second map in our WNC Trail Guide Series.  The reviewer did a side-by-side comparison with another map of the forest and found them both to be useful trail companions.   Some things the reviewer liked about our map:

  • Large format allowing more detail.  A benefit for dense trail networks like DuPont.
  • Folded dimensions/paper quality appropriate for use in the field.
  • Cartographic design/map style is consistent with our other maps.  Easy to read, trail names clearly labeled, crisp contours, etc …
  • A wealth of information included in addition to the main map.
  • Inset maps and trail descriptions for popular rides, hikes and waterfall information.
